Timuquana Country Club, one of Florida's oldest and most historic clubs, is set to host the 23rd Florida Amateur Match Play this week August 1-4. The top 64 amateurs in the state will compete in traditional match-play format in hopes of capturing the title.
Prior to this week's championship, more than 300 players attempted to qualify at one of seven sites across the state. The first round of the Championship will consist of 18 holes of individual stroke play to determine seeds in the round of 64 (all ties for seeds will be broken randomly). The second round on Friday will mark the start of match play, with the round of 64 to be played in the morning and then the round of 32 to be played in the afternoon. The round of 16 tees off Saturday morning followed by the quarter-finals that afternoon. Sunday, the semi-finals are in the morning and the finals in the afternoon.
The 2013 field features two past Amateur Match Play Champions including the 2011 Champion Don Bell, from Port Orange, and the 2001 Champion Joe Alfieri, of Lutz. Other notable players include recent Florida Open low amateur, Robert Geibel, of Pembroke Pines, 2013 State Public Links Champion, Nick Brothers, of Crystal River, 2013 Boy's Junior Champion, Jacob Kline, of Saint Augustine, and current Mid-Senior Champion, Ken Moody from Ponte Vedra Beach.
Spectators and media are welcome to watch the state’s best amateur golfers compete at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville.
