Five Alive!
Five Florida Men and Women are alive in the Round of 32 match play at the US Mid-Amateur and US Women's Mid-Amateur Championships. The Mid-Amateur is being conducted at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Women's Mid-Amateur is being conducted at the Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, North Carolina.
Two Men are on to the Round of 32
Jon Veneziano of Mount Dora, used steady play to move to 6-up through 10 holes and held on to advance 3 & 2 over Doug Clapp of Walpole, Mass. Veneziano will face Todd Mitchell of Bloomington, Ill in the Round of 32.
Joe Alfieri of Lutz, after a hard fought front side used 3 consecutive birdies on 11, 12 & 13 to move 4-up and advanced taking down Michael McDermott of Bryn Mawr, Pa 3 & 2. Alfieri will face Joseph Saladino of Huntington, NY this morning.
TJ Shuart of Coral Springs, advanced to Match Play, but fell in the Round of 64 to Joseph Saladino of Huntington, NY 2 & 1.
Bryan Haase of Jupiter, fell 5 & 4 in the Round of 64 to Todd Mitchell of Bloomington, Ill
On the Women's side, three of the four Florida Women advanced to the Round of 32
Meghan Stasi, cruised to a 5 & 4 victory over Julie Streng of Greensboro, NC and will face Amy Loughney of Hoboken, NJ in the next leg of her attempt to defend her Mid-Am title.
Tara Joy-Connelly used back-to-back birdies on the 5th & 6th holes to move to 3-up and never looked back defeating Lisa Anderson of Middleton, Ma 4 & 3, and will play Kareen Markle of Meridian, Id.
Lin McMillan of Palm Coast also ousted her opponent Olivia Slutzky of Newport Beach, Ca 4 & 3 and has a Round of 32 matchup with Martha Leach of Hebron, Ky.
Therese Quinn of Jacksonville fell to Olivia Herrick of Roseville, Mn.
