Nichols, Sands and Williams Capture Winter Series Victories

 

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. Three players reigned victorious at the Winter Series – Mission Resort + Club. The event consisted of thirty-six holes of stroke play competed over two course: El Campeon and then Las Colinas. Graham Nichols of the Mid-Amateur Division, Bruce Sands of the Senior Division, and Pete Williams of the Super-Senior Division each secured a victory.

Mid-Amateur Division

Graham Nichols posted rounds of 77-74 to secure his victory by six strokes over the field. This win is Nichols first Winter Series win of his career. He carded two birdies during the first round at El Campeon and trailed the lead by one stroke heading into the final round. In the second round, played on Las Colinas, consistency was key for Nichols as he carded only three bogeys en route to a three over par, 74.

In addition, Brandon Mourges and Brian Bassett tied for second place at fourteen over par for the two days. Mourges round hightlights includes an eagle on the first hole at El Campeon. A par five lined with penalty area. Moreover, he posted three more birdies over the thirty-six holes.

Senior Division

Bruce Sands secured a victory after posting scores of 76-73 and outlasted his division by two strokes. Sands trailed the lead by one stroke after the first round, but after posting two birdies in the final round resulting in a 73, Sands grabbed the victory.

In addition, Tom Pelegrin fired scores of 75-76 to secure second place. Smith Patterson posted scores of 79-73 to finish in third place.

Super-Senior Division

Pete Williams is certainly a common name in the FSGA winner’s circle. The former Senior Amateur Player of the Year grabbed yet another victory. Williams posted scores of 72-75 to win by two strokes over his division. He posted the low round of 72 after the first day to share the lead heading into the final round. Williams had five birdies over the thirty-six holes.

Moreover, Dante Najarian, Harry Black, and Earl Lanoue all tied for second place with a tournament total of six over par. Najarian shared the lead with Williams after the first round but ultimately fell short of the win.

Handicap:  Florida GHIN 10.0 or less

Eligibility

  • Entries are open to male amateur golfers who are age 25 or older as of March 5th, 2024
  • Each player must compete in the age division comensurate with their age as of March 5th, 2024. Competitors may not elect to play in a different age division or from a different tee than designated 
  • Entrant must be an Adult or Foundation Member of the FSGA
  • Entrant must have an active Florida GHIN Handicap and have a current handicap index of 10.0 or lower

Entry Fees & Prizes

  • $195
  • Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field
  • Age-group Champions at each event will receive a commemorative award. Gift certificates (totalling approximately $30 per-player in the field) will be awarded to the top finishers in each age group

  • Monday, February 19th
    • 12:30 PM - Round one shotgun on El Campeon
  • Tuesday, February 20th
    • 8:00 AM - Round two shotgun on Las Colinas

Practice Round Information

  • Available one week prior to the event on a space available basis and are restricted to after 12:00 PM on weekends
  • Practice round rate: $65.00 + tax
